Edwin R. Clarke (1828–1900), a prosperous druggist and grocer, immortalized himself in Coldwater with the gift of this library to the city. Parker designed the cross-gable-roofed, corner-towered, brick Queen Anne building, following the plan by W. F. Poole, librarian of the Chicago Public Library, which was published in the Library Journal. Large arched windows allow ample light into the reading rooms. The building was fireproof and well ventilated. In 1979, a large addition that complements the original building was completed, and the building was renovated.
