Jay Millard Chandler built this Second Empire house for the comfort of his new bride, Frances Campbell Chandler, in the frontier of Michigan in the 1870s. Her childhood home in Montour Falls, New York, reportedly inspired the design. The one-and-a-half-story house stands on a full raised basement, with rusticated brick walls simulating stone. Originally, the basement held the kitchen and dining room. The house is enlivened with porches and is topped with a convex mansard roof sheathed in tin.
