This eclectic house, with its rock-face ashlar marble facades, is among the most distinctive in Mount Vernon Place. Archer was known for his designs for Gothic Revival churches, later buildings for The John Hopkins Hospital, and various period revival residences of which this is considered his masterpiece. It sits at the intersection with W. Madison Street, projecting two bold and highly decorative facades radiating from its prominent round corner tower. It was built for George and Sarah Graham, later passing to their daughter Isabella and her husband Thomas Hughes, for nearly ninety years of family occupancy.
