The Main Street Diner is significant architecturally as one of the first diners with a stainless steel exterior manufactured by the Worcester Lunch Car Company. The diner illustrates the company's efforts after World War II to update its diner line, which had consisted largely of the traditional barrel-roofed form clad with porcelain enamel panels. Custom-built for this site as Worcester Diner No. 834, the Main Street Diner is quite small for its period of construction, with a capacity of only thirty to thirty-six people. The diner combines a contemporary exterior with the small-scale, wood-and-tile interior that had long characterized a handcrafted Worcester-built diner.
