Originally conceived as a multiuse complex, according to an urban design plan by Dennis Carlone of the Cambridge Community Development Department in 1978, the site, adjacent to the computer and biotechnology industries of “Silicon Valley East,” is in the process of continuous change. The stable heart of the development is composed of a series of office buildings, high-rise residences, stores, and restaurants, with the Cambridge-Side Galleria (

) as its principal focus. The eighty-four-acre triangle stretching from the Lechmere Canal (

) to the Longfellow Bridge (see

) is still in progress, whereas the neighborhood around and to the west of the Bulfinch courthouse (see

) is undergoing gentrification, and the formerly industrial area to the north of the Lechmere Triangle is beginning a complete transformation.
