A three-story red brick and cast stone shopping mall organized around a long central skylit atrium, with its main access from either the parking garage or the promenade bordering the Lechmere Canal fountain, has proven to be a lively hangout for young local residents, as well as serious shoppers. Echoes of Louis Sullivan's midwestern banks can be seen in the facades along 1st Street. The development corporation hoped to lend a sophisticated and cosmopolitan air to the propitious site, with its frontage lined with cafés bordering the canal basin. However, the current clientele has imparted a more down-to-earth atmosphere, despite the presence of several upscale shops.
