Favrot and Livaudais’s 1922 extension to the former American Can Company, which made cans for coffee, molasses, and beer, matched their original design of 1906. The four-story factory, clearly expresses its steel frame on the exterior in the manner of Albert Kahn’s early-twentieth-century industrial buildings for
the automobile industry in Detroit. Like Kahn’s designs, the exterior is aesthetically enriched with bands of red brick marking each floor and is lightly dotted with geometric ornamentation in brick. The factory closed in 1988 and, after standing empty for some years, was converted into apartments.
