Built with funds from Andrew Carnegie, this Arts and Crafts former library is two stories in height with a pair of stairs flanking a ground level entrance and rising to the principal floor. Closed in 1958, the building subsequently had several tenants before it was inundated by four feet of water in Hurricane Katrina. When the building was renovated for its current use, a WPA-funded mural was uncovered and restored. Painted by local artist Edward T. Schoenberger in 1941 for the library’s reading room, the fifty-foot-long mural, The History of Printing, depicts artists from stone carvers to printers working a press.
