Grandson of an English settler, the Revolutionary War soldier John Hazzard built this house and engaged in shipping and shipbuilding at the future site of Milton. His son, David, was a governor of Delaware from 1830 to 1833. The original section of the shingled dwelling was single-pile, hall-parlor in plan, with a heavy timber frame on English-bond brick foundations.
