1922, George Oakley Totten, Jr. 2633 15th St. NW

Totten's design of a small apartment complex for Mrs. Henderson in 1922 was horizontal and sprawling in contrast to contemporaneous high-rise apartments, undertaken by professional developers, that were close to it. E-shaped, with two- to three-story gabled wings, its composition and detailing were derived from French vernacular architecture but influenced by the picturesque planning principles of the English Arts and Crafts movement. The reinforced-concrete wall construction was prefabricated on the site, with each wall segment poured into forms and then raised into place, a technique developed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
