A steel skeleton and brick skin form the original building of this complex, whose 1,000-tons-per-day capacity jumped to 3,350 tons with the addition of two more buildings. All three have paneled brick walls and stepped parapets fronting barrel-vault roofs. This factory, now closed, once employed 400 workers earning an average of 35 cents per hour. In the 1920s during an average day they sliced 1,650 tons of beets and during an average year converted 200,000 tons of beets into 35 million pounds of sugar. The six conjoined storage elevators attest to the former importance of the sugar industry in the Arkansas River Valley.
