Cheesman Park

-A A +A
1898, Reinhard Schuetze. E. 8th to E. 13th aves., between Franklin and Race sts. (NR)
  • (Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division)

Once the city cemetery, this fine urban park follows Reinhard Schuetze's 1898 plan. Curvilinear walks and drives and perimeter trees border an expanse of lawn that carries the eye to the mountain view. A formal hilltop garden and reflecting pool surround the Colorado Yule marble Cheesman Pavilion (1910, Marean and Norton). A block-long esplanade (1912) between Williams and High streets joins the south end of the park to the East 7th Avenue Parkway ( DV137).
