Openness resulting from an unusually even balance between walls and windows, variety in window shapes and coherence in their groupings, sensitive handling of rock-faced limestone walls with smooth surfaces emphasizing tectonic seams, and intertwined foliated decoration used in an entirely personal, rather than standardized, manner: all characterize the well-designed and very well-crafted Heald house. The builder, Robert Collins, erected it for $7,000, a considerable sum in 1895.
