Unadulterated Richardsonian Romanesque buildings on Capitol Hill are rare, although influence of this style pervades most of the late Victorian styles erected here. Two canonical Richardsonian examples are neighboring houses, both substantial, rock-faced, white limestone buildings with deep entry porches set off by foliated columns. The light color of the stone somewhat offsets the ponderousness of the walls, as do intermittent bands of smooth stone that reflect more light than do the textured surfaces.
