Brothers Jared, John, and William Brush left Missouri for Colorado in 1859 with a train of mules. They tried mining, then switched to homesteading on the Big Thompson River. Their ranch supplied beef and hay to mountain mining towns. The Brush ranch house and barn are among the oldest pioneer structures in Weld County. The saltbox house has horizontal board siding and a full-width front porch with squared columns. Well-tended and expanded by additions, the Brush house still sits on its original stone foundation. The square barn (1865), with notched and pegged beams, board-and-batten siding, louvered vents, and pigeonholes, is in near-original, unpainted state.
