A “Dead End” sign leads to Silverton's only cemetery. On a hill overlooking the town, this burial ground invaded by aspen and wildflowers contains stone markers commemorating in various languages the short and dangerous lives of mining town residents. The Story of Hillside Cemetery, 1873–1988 (San Juan County Historical Society, 1989) contains biographical sketches of nearly all the 1,100 people buried here.
