Fritz Benedict planned the original Snowmass Village for the Janss family, Los Angeles developers who also owned Sun Valley. Another Aspen architect, Samuel Caudill, has designed many of the retrofitted and new facilities, including the plaza, conference center, and Silvertree Lodge. Vacation homes are proliferating on every slope in sight. Some are notable, such as William Turnbull's Woodrun Place (1982), 425 Wood Run, and Harry Weese's Lavatelli residence (1969). A few old ranches and the Brush Creek Schoolhouse (1894), a clapboard one-room school used until 1943, survive from yesteryear.
