Jerome B. Wheeler's imposing, three-story Queen Anne house of red brick has a shake-shingle roof and distinctive Eastlake trim. Wheeler built the house for his wife, who still refused to budge from their Manitou Springs home. He gave Aspen the $90,000 mansion, its first smelter, its bank, and its opera house but lost most of his assets in the silver crash. In 1969 the Aspen Historical Society purchased the house as a museum and headquarters. The society, whose offices and archives are in the matching carriage house, offers house and town tours from the mansion, which occupies most of a treeshaded block.
