1884–1907. 401 Smithland Ave.

A roof-top balustrade is about the only hint of elegance left in this deteriorated two-story beige brick complex, which opened as a tuberculosis sanatarium and later became a hospital for railroad workers. It stood vacant for many years until purchased by the Elks, who are slowly renovating it as a bingo club. Part of the neglected three-block grounds are occupied by a housing project.
