George W. Warner, secretary-treasurer for the Fort Morgan Land and Canal Company and founding editor of the Fort Morgan Times, moved from his downtown tent into this pressed brick dwelling. Over the years, the original four-room homesteader house evolved into a two-story Queen Anne dwelling with multiple roof gables and a prominent octagonal entry turret rising above a wrap-around porch. Warner designed this transformation to accommodate his growing family and to provide a show home for the subdivision of his 160-acre farm, a development he promoted with a twenty-two-page pamphlet, An Oasis in the Desert. Warner's subdivision is now part of the Sherman Street Historic District, Sherman Street between Platte and Beaver avenues (NRD). This small district consists of four prominent houses and related outbuildings constructed between 1886 and 1926.
