Single-cell houses similar to this, with massive exterior chimneys, were a common sight in the landscape of the Virginia peninsulas in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Woodlawn is well built and serviceable, with a gambrel roof that allowed for expansion. It stood vacant for many years before its recent restoration.
