The library is the finest building on campus, a Spanish Colonial Revival beauty of white stucco with a red tile roof and arched windows. The Churrigueresque terracotta entry surround is adorned with the college seal, the lamp of learning, the microscope of science, the harp of music, and the scroll of literature. On the interior, restored in 1996, are a patterned particle board ceiling and Neo–Spanish Colonial oak furniture. The library set an elegant standard continued in Crawford Hall, to the west, and Ute Hall, on the south side of the campus quadrangle. Post–World War II buildings are bland, although the three-story library addition (1964) is more colorful and in scale with the exquisite library.
