1958, Cletus W. Bergen and William P. Bergen Architects. E. 44th St. at Chatham Crescent, Chatham Crescent

Attached to the earlier Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (1942, Henry D. Dagit and Sons), this modernist building

confidently departs from traditional school architecture with its dynamic asymmetry and abstract planes. With the Cathedral Parochial School (8.18) downtown, the school showcases the Catholic diocese’s commitment to a fresh image during the 1950s. Reinforced concrete fins and horizontal roof planes define the eight classrooms on the south facade and boldly project forward, shading the metal and glass window walls from the sun. Simple brick and glass walls mark the entrance, which is crowned by an arched concrete canopy.
