Shadowlawn (c. 1855) at 712 S. 11th Street was the home of W. S. Neilson, who founded Neilson’s Department Store (see NC18) on the courthouse square. It is the work of local designer-builder William Turner, who gave it his signature square-columned portico form. The Roberts-Neilson House (c. 1880; 911 S. Lamar Boulevard) was once occupied by Joseph E. Neilson, another member of the department store’s family. Attributed to Gustavus M. Torgerson, it is the best example of Second Empire in town. The Thompson-Chandler House, called Hamilton Hall (c. 1860; 923 S. 13th Street) is another house with a portico designed and built by William Turner.
