Built for Maryland Blue Cross-Blue Shield health insurance company, this bold mirrored glass cube served as its headquarters until 1989. The design by Peterson and Brickbauer, best known for Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport, places the main eleven-story tower on a verdant green lawn with a semicircular recessed drive and concrete base of subterranean parking. A dramatic red-glazed brick heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) tower sits in the foreground of the site, reflected in the glass wall of the tower and consistent with Brickbauer’s later use of red-glazed tile walls at BWI. After Blue Cross-Blue Shield relocated in 1989, Baltimore County purchased the building and its approximately seven-acre site to house its Public Safety Department.
