2001, Overland Partners and JSA. 4000 W Loop, 250 N. Frontage Rd.

Having outgrown its original parish complex, St. Nicholas acquired eight acres beside the freeway (TX 250). Overland Partners of San Antonio and JSA of Odessa produced a regionalist design in brick and stone that gives the church visibility from the freeway while protecting interior spaces from noise and visual distraction. The shed-roofed church turns a high-set clerestory window to the south toward the freeway, while stepped clerestories bring north light into the nave. From the freeway, cast-stone-clad walls identify circulation spaces that link the church with other parts of the parish complex, which also encompasses a series of large and small courtyards. A square bell tower with a metal cross is the sole traditional church symbol on the otherwise commercial/institutional-appearing building.
