Philip Johnson’s Pennzoil Place in Houston demonstrated that splitting a building into two matched towers of angular geometry could be an effective architectural and marketing statement. The Midland National Bank complex, by the Houston architects who were Johnson’s associates on Pennzoil Place, consists of two mirror-image trapezoid-plan office buildings of concrete and flush-mounted black glass. The stepped profiles of the angled facades create dozens of highly prized corner windows.
