The center houses three separate institutions: the George W. Bush Library, a museum, and the George W. Bush Institute. The mandate to continue the red brick Georgian heritage of the campus produced a modernized classicism more akin to that of the 1930s than the elegance of Mark Lemmon’s work. Low, horizontal brick forms break at the north entrance into a court lined with stone square-columned loggias. Rising above the court is a stone cube with a lanternlike top story. The 207,000-square-foot windowless center is LEED Platinum certified and includes a substantial adjacent park, planted with northeast Texas prairie trees, flowers, and grasses. It is accessed via a circular hiking trail just a few feet and a high masonry wall from the Dallas Central Expressway.
