Sibbert, the New York City–based company architect for S. H. Kress and Company, designed a series of stores for the chain, mostly in southern states. The company’s intent was to give Kress a distinctive corporate identity, yet Sibbert did not merely produce identical copies of a prototype. The upper facade of the Lubbock store is clad in buff brick with glazed terra-cotta trim that is Spanish in character. At street level, curved glass show windows sheltered by a suspended metal marquee create a more streamlined impression.
