Public uproar about honoring “raping, pillaging, lazy, sneaky, dirty redskins” forced Frederick MacMonnies to replace his original heroic Native American figure with one of Kit Carson atop this monument on a triangular site along the north edge of Civic Center. Carson, on horseback, dominates bronze figures of a prospector, a hunter, and a rifle-toting pioneer mother with her infant. The hexagonal granite base also supports a fountain flowing into a pool at the base of the statuary. The monument was restored in 1983.
