The dazzling gilded thirteen-foot-high equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, clad in armor and holding a lance (a copy of the original statue of 1874 in the place des Pyramides in Paris), was a gift to the City from France in 1964 during the presidency of Charles de Gaulle. Originally installed in front of the International Trade Mart (

) and the Rivergate Convention Center (1968, Curtis and Davis; demolished 1955), Joan was moved when the present casino was constructed at that site. This new location in the heart of the Vieux Carré in a pocket park gives the work the greater visibility it deserves.
