Probably built as a merchant's residence about 1730, the three-room-plan building opposite Ambler's Storehouse had a high storage cellar entered from the rear, facing the river. Street filling in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has reduced its apparent height. John Scarff, from the Baltimore architecture firm of Wyatt and Nolting, planned the restoration in 1924–1925 for G. D. and Emma Chenoweth, with the intention of reversing nineteenth-century alterations to the fenestration and interior finish.
