Jeffersonian Deco might be the term for this wonderful post office with a splayed plan and a domed entrance that skillfully turns the corner at this intersection. In keeping with other federal designs for post offices in Virginia, it is red brick with light-colored stone trim, but as a departure from strait-laced Colonial Revival, details such as the piers are abstracted. The interior furnishings are largely original. The public lobby also contains six small murals by Auriel Bessener (1940) that depict local history in subjects ranging from Native Americans to activities of the halcyon days of pre–World War II, apple picking and polo playing.
