late 1940s. 821 Brown, 240½ Cunningham

A second type of prefabricated construction declared surplus by the government was the Loxtave house. Designed by the U.S. Navy, these horizontal plank structures are assembled with a locking system at the corners. More than a dozen were erected on Government Hill, and two survive. The house at 821 Brown is in the best condition, with a vestibule added to the end but no other obvious alterations. The other, at 240½ Cunningham, has gable-roofed entries on the side and front.
