Operated by the Alaska Commercial Company, the Stuaqpak, or supermarket and general store, was constructed for the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation. Because of Barrow's strong winds, the large building has little ornament, but diagonal cedar siding contrasts with an orange cylindrical element across the front, sheltering the entrances—a high-tech arctic entry. Inside, second-level windows light the front of the first level, where it is open to the second. The building was designed in 1976 by Kelley Pittelko Fritz and Forssen of Los Angeles.
