Charles Brower built a one-and-a-half-story wood-framed house for his Eskimo wife, Asianggataq, and their growing family in 1905, next door to his trading post. According to his daughter Sadie Brower Neakok, who was born in 1916 and grew up in the house, the first floor was one big room, with a cookstove in the center. On the second floor, where everyone slept, the older children's quarters were partitioned from the parents and babies. Since then, the roof has been raised to accommodate a second story, the pitch has been changed, and the building has received several additions.
