1867. 420 Drennen St.

Returning to Van Buren after serving as a Confederate Army surgeon, Virginia-born physician Brown built his family residence to include space for his medical practice. The five-bay brick central-hall house mixes Greek Revival symmetry with Italianate details. The house has a narrow central gable filled with a two-light window and a porch supported by four slender columns on plinths and with ornate brackets. Sidelights and a transom frame the door. The rear ell extending to the south provided spaces for Brown’s surgery.
