Garland County Courthouse

Garland County Courthouse

Garland County Courthouse Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, A Division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage
1905–1906; 1913 interior restoration; 1970s additions. 501 Ouachita Ave.

This Renaissance Revival courthouse completed in 1906 replaced an earlier structure that fell victim to a fire that claimed some twenty blocks of the city. In 1913 another fire, this one sweeping through fifty blocks of downtown, severely damaged this building. Though gutted, the courthouse’s exterior walls remained sound and the interior was restored, though the three domes that originally topped the courthouse were not rebuilt. The central portion of the three-story five-part brick building projects slightly from the main body and is articulated with four Ionic pilasters of brick and a pediment. A balustrade lines the roofline, and a domed cupola carried on paired Ionic columns concludes the courthouse.
