Alderson House

Alderson House

Alderson House Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, A Division of the Department of Arkansas Heritage
1923; later addition. 204 Pine Bluff St.

This one-and-a-half-story wood frame house was constructed for James Alderson and his wife in this early-twentieth-century primarily residential neighborhood. Alderson owned the Malvern Meteor newspaper from 1915 to 1932, and in 1934 he became postmaster. The house is Craftsman in style, a popular form throughout the United States at the time it was built. A low-pitched gable supported by two battered red brick piers carries the gabled porch, and other familiar Craftsman details are exposed rafter ends, wood knee brackets, and false half-timbers added to gables. A two-story addition was later added to the rear. To the side of the building a porte-cochere is also carried on brick piers.
