Wharton's modern motel is the former Drummer's Inn, named for the traveling salesmen who once scoured their territories drumming up business. The one-story office and event room building connects to a two-story rear wing containing forty-five guest rooms that faces the swimming pool. The flat-roofed buildings feature aluminum-framed glass curtain walls set in an armature of exposed concrete masonry units. It is the proportions of the panelized wall surfaces and the consistency of detailing that elevate the Drummer's Inn above the ordinary. The vaulted porte-cochere at the motel's entrance and intermittent wall panels of black volcanic rock are defining mid-1960s touches.
