The regional electrical power company, Houston Lighting and Power Company, built distinctive local office buildings throughout its service region in the mid-1960s. Its former Wharton Service Center Building is a one-story, flat-roofed, brick building with a modular steel, aluminum, and glass pavilion affixed to its highway front. The building is set back from Richmond Road on an intensively planted four-and-a-half-acre site, representing the complex of modern architecture and pastoral suburban landscape at its most attractive. The building was rehabilitated as headquarters of the Wharton Police Department by Stern and Bucek of Houston in 2010.
