Fayetteville citizens raised funds toward the construction of this modest, two-story clapboard precinct courthouse. Criminal trials were held in the building and docket books are still inside. A two-cell jail was installed on the second floor in 1887. The tower and clock that were built from funds donated by a local ladies' group needed additional structural framing, which is visible on the second-floor interior. Although of a later date, this courthouse and the similar one in Round Top (see PF23) are the only remaining examples of an early county courthouse type built in Texas in the 1850s.
