The courthouse square is centered on a grid plan at the town's principal crossroads, but the grid disintegrates rapidly as the transition from town to country begins only a block or two away in this small town. The original precinct courthouse of the 1880s, a county outpost that gave the community access to government functions without the long travel to the county seat in La Grange, burned in 1924. It was replaced by this simple, wood-framed, two-story building with a hipped roof and belvedere that recalls the 1850s generation of Texas courthouses.
