On the northern edge of Port Arthur, Caudill Rowlett Scott produced a 1950s campus of low one- and two-story modern classroom buildings linked by wide, canopy-covered walkways. Set on a broad, flat site, Jefferson High School emphasizes spatial openness. Offsetting the rectilinear extension of the classroom blocks is a pair of volumetrically assertive, steel-framed gymnasiums roofed with intersecting vaults. Note the articulation of the framing connections where the arched steel girders supporting the roof vaults splay into concrete foundation piers. The most famous graduate of the school was singer Janis Joplin (class of 1960).
