New York City architects Warren and Wet-more produced what is still the grandest skyscraper in Houston as a regional headquarters building for the Texas Company (Texaco). The thirteen-story building is notable for its limestone facing, its vaulted arcades carried on limestone piers and columns above the Rusk Avenue and San Jacinto Street sidewalks, and the monumental attic zone and cornice that give the building its superior stature. Opposite at 701 San Jacinto Street is the French classical U.S. Post Office of 1911 by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury.
