The thirty-three-story Tenneco Building was built by the Tennessee Gas Transmission Company, a conglomerate that grew out of a natural gas pipeline distribution system formed during World War II. Tenneco represents Edward C. Bassett of SOM's regionalization of the steel-framed, glass curtain wall, high-rise office building of the late 1950s and 1960s. He recessed the glass ten feet behind the steel structural bays of the square tower so that the structural frame shades the glass on all four sides. Rehabilitation of the building by Gensler in 2010–2011 entailed extensive alterations to the base of the building.
