The former Maetze Bank Building stands out on the square because it does not look like Leffland's work. The dark red brick storefront is decorated on its second story with poly-chrome brick and limestone Moorish arches and terra-cotta tiles bearing relief decoration.

Next door at 244–250 S. Commercial Street, the two-story Pettus Building (1912) is one of the largest buildings on the square. It consists of a pair of storefronts separated by a wide two-story central bay that incorporates a deeply recessed loggia at the second-story level. The facade detailing suggests the Pettus Building could be by Leffland and Son. Down the street, at 314–324 S. Commercial Street, is a long, one-story, dark red brick commercial building, rehabilitated as the Goliad County Public Library in 2002 by Houston architect Ray Bailey.
