The campus buildings illustrate the growth of this small private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church from its founding in 1873. The Roy and Lillie Cullen Building, “Old Main” (1900), the administration building designed by physics professor Robert S. Hyer, set the tone of the campus in Richardsonian Romanesque with a square tower of limestone quarried nearby and dressed on-site. Mood-Bridwell Hall (1908), the second building on campus, is the work of C. H. Page and Brother of Austin. Houston architects C. B. Schoeppl and Company and Alfred C. Finn contributed designs for new buildings in the 1920s and 1930s. The current campus began to be formed in the 1950s focusing on a central mall and most of the development has occurred in the late twentieth century in styles deferring to the early buildings.
