1883, 1890. 1200–1236 E. Adams St.

At the northeast corner of Market Square, this is a large, two-story, brick, square-shaped commercial-residential block with a too-shallow cornice articulated by brick pendants. While its shuttered French door openings and balcony remain at the second floor, the original ground-floor openings of double wood doors were reconfigured as plate glass display windows in the early twentieth century. A one-story wing, dating to 1890, gives the recently rehabilitated compound a substantial presence, and attests to the entrepreneurial success of the Spanish immigrant Fernández family.
