Goldsmith Hall faces West Mall, an east–west axis that connects the main campus axis with Guadalupe Street, the commercial thoroughfare. The hall's tower, paired with a similar tower on the Texas Union Building on the north side of West Mall, forms a formal portal into the campus. The addition of 1988 sought to blend seamlessly with the original building, causing some confusion, however, over the identity of the historic part of the building.
